Luke Salaman. Keel
A photograph of the Brunel’s ship the SS Great Britain
“I photographed the ship over a period of four years between September 2002 and July 2005, I was attracted to documenting this changing period in it’s history, and to the ship itself which is a remarkable and evocative object, and an extraordinary engineering feat. It bears the evidence of over one hundred and sixty years of weather, erosion and decay as well as the recent 35 years of repair. I aimed to make Images that tell of the ship’s recent rebuilding and evoke it’s working past, pictures that have associations with maps and huge distances, with travelling round the world, through thousands of nights, through dark waters.” Luke Salaman
